The Halloween Kills movie trailer picks up right after the ending of Halloween (2018), hinting at how Michael Myers survives to kill another day. In 2018, Michael Myers and final girl Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) returned in a new slasher flick that retconned all previous Halloween sequels. It served as both a reboot of sorts and a continuation to the original 1978 John Carpenter film, picking up with the main characters decades later. Laurie suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of the events of the original Halloween, and it's caused tension with her daughter Karen (Judy Greer) as she tries to have a relationship with her granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak).

Directed by David Gordon Green, Halloween was such a success that two sequels were put into development, which have since been titled Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends, seemingly indicating the movies would put a new capper on the storied horror franchise. Though exact story details for Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends are unknown, it was presumed that Michael Myers would return in some form despite the 2018 film's ending. Now the first trailer for Halloween's sequel is released.

Universal Pictures released the first Halloween Kills movie trailer, depicting Laurie, Karen and Allyson after the ending of Halloween. The teaser hints at exactly what comes next for not only the family but Michael Myers, who'd been left to die in a house fire. Watch the trailer below.

In the 2018 movie, Halloween followed an older Laurie as she's terrorized once again by Michael Myers, who's broken out of the psychiatric hospital where he was being held. After a slew of gruesome kills, Michael and Laurie have a final showdown at her house - but she's been preparing for a rematch for decades. In the end, she traps Michael in the house then sets in on fire. Though it seemed like Laurie had seen the last of Michael, a Halloween post-credits tease hinted that the villain had survived. Now this Halloween Kills trailer seems to reveal firefighters will get to Laurie's house in time to save Michael, allowing him to return in the sequel. This isn't the most inventive way for Michael Myers to survive, but it certainly makes the most sense and keeps the franchise grounded in reality.

However, it still remains to be seen if Green can deliver another successful entry in the Halloween film series with Halloween Kills. As seen in the original run of sequels, the quality of Halloween movies can vary greatly. Halloween already dealt with Laurie having to face Michael Myers again after many years, so Halloween Kills runs the risk of retreading the same material. That said, based on the fact that both Halloween Kills and Ends were planned together as followups to Halloween, it's likely Green has a full story in mind for his horror trilogy. Further, if this Halloween Kills trailer is anything to go by, Green will offer up another entertaining installment in the Halloween franchise. It's too bad this teaser was released along with the announcement that the Halloween Kills release date has been delayed to 2021, and Halloween Ends to 2022, meaning both with arrive a year later than previously expected.
