Vance Astro will not make his big screen debut in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, James Gunn has revealed. The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s cosmic franchise made narrative progression this year with the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which featured a more personal story but still with the galactic world-saving adventure that the rag-tag of superheroes have been known for. Unfortunately, even though the squad scored a major win in the end, it came with some consequences – including Yondu (Michael Rooker) sacrificing his own life to save Peter (Chris Pratt).

The writer and director and overall main proponent of Marvel Studios’ cosmic-based adventure has been hard at work developing and crafting the story on the next installment of the franchise. The treatment is supposedly done with its soundtrack also in the middle of the selection process.

Unfortunately, although Guardians 3 is expected to introduce a slew of new comic book characters – like the already teased Adam Warlock – the original founding member of the beloved team of galactic superheroes will not make the jump to the film just yet.

MCUExchange posted on their Twitter that Gunn has essentially squashed any hopes that Vance Astro will somehow make an appearance in Guardians 3 during his panel at HASCON over the weekend. When asked about the chance of the original Guardians member finally making his movie debut in the threequel, Gunn said, “Not great. I’m done with [the script’s] treatment.”

As previously mentioned, Vance Astro is the original Guardians of the Galaxy’s leader in the pages of the comic books. Just like Peter, he was originally from Earth but his adventures brought him to the cosmic realms via volunteering to man a government-sponsored trip into space in 1988. His space adventures included landing on the planet Centauri IV and eventually forming the galactic heroes with him as a leader. Obviously, the MCU’s version of the team has changed from the comics, but some of Vance Astro’s old pals like Martinex (played by Michael Rosenbaum), Charlie-27 (played by Ving Rhames) and even Yondu have already appeared in the movies making fans hope that Major Victory will soon follow.

That said, even without appearing in GOTG3, we could still get a reference to Vance Astro in the threequel, which would be a good thing as it would indicate that Marvel has some plans for him down the line. This is especially possible when the film is expected to open up so many narrative possibilities that would allow the franchise to continue this kind of interwoven storytelling through various films for the next 10 years.

We don’t have to wait very long to see the Star-Lord and company back on the big screen, as although Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 won’t be out until at least 2020, the cosmic heroes will join forces with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in Avengers: Infinity War. As a collective, the two teams, as well as, their other super-powered allies, will have to work together to protect the whole universe against Mad Titan Thanos and the Black Order, who endeavor to rule with the use of the Infinity Gems.
