Except for the critically and audience adored Suits, USA is very much lacking in the drama category these days. However, it seems the network is hoping to turn that around with its newly-acquired show, Colony.

From onetime Lost co-showrunner Carlton Cuse and star Josh Holloway, the series has received a ten episode first season order from USA. An official production start and premiere date shave yet to be determined, though.

Here is how Variety describe the series:

Colony centers on a family — headed up by Holloway and [Sarah Wayne Callies] — who must make difficult decisions as they balance staying together with trying to survive. They live in L.A., which has been occupied by a force of outside intruders. While some people have chosen to collaborate with the authorities and benefit from the new order, others have rebelled — and suffer the consequences.

In addition to Cuse, Colony is also being executive produced by Hercules co-screenwriter Ryan Condal. This new show will mark Cuse’s fifth series in some stage of development or production. That includes the ongoing Bates Motel and The Returned on A&E, as well as The Strain on FX, and Point of Honor on Amazon.

As it stands, it’s not surprising USA is getting into the post-apocalypse game when its main competitor, TNT, has already seen massive success since 2010 with Falling Skies and now The Last Ship – not to mention the most watched scripted series on television, The Walking Dead, also happens to be a post-apocalyptic series.

It appears a lack of budget isn’t stopping basic cable networks from diving headfirst into the high concept genre game. There was once a time only the big four (ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox) and premium cable giants like HBO could afford series like this, but for whatever reason – cheaper production costs, fewer episode count (so more money per episode) – things have opened up for other networks to get in on the fun.

Stayed tuned for more on Colony as it develops.
