When Gotham was first announced, many expected a police procedural with ideas taken from the much beloved comic series Gotham Central. However, series creator Bruno Heller took the series in a different direction, exploring the origin of the Batman mythos and the characters that populate the most dangerous city in comics.

While the show wasn’t always successful, it did ensure that the viewers got to glimpse many recognizable characters in their earliest days. From Victor Zsasz (Anthony Carrigan) to fan-favorite Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor), the series was never lacking in iconic villains. Season 2 seems to be continuing the trend, with Harvey Dent (Nicholas D’Agosto) returning as a series regular and the addition of two new villains: Theo and Tabitha Galavan.

TVLine reports that Gracepoint actress Jessica Lucas will be playing Tabitha Galavan in Gotham‘s second season. Tabitha is a new version of DC villain Tigress and works for her brother Theo, portrayed by Orphan Black actor James Frain. Tigress is described as a “sexy knockout” with a penchant for violence, the opposite of her calm and collected brother. The two at first appear to be saviors of Gotham, but it’s soon revealed that they have a malicious secret agenda against the city.

Despite having far fewer acting credits than her counterpart Frain, Lucas has a wide range of experience, from dramas such as Melrose Place and Cult to genre films like Evil Dead and Cloverfield. Her previous experience working both for Fox (Gracepoint) and Warner Bros. (Cult) made her a strong candidate to join the series.

There have been multiple incarnations of the character Tigress in the comics, though the most well-known is Artemis Crock, a superhuman with enhanced senses and fighting skills. She wields a miniature crossbow, not dissimilar from the one wielded by the character Huntress, as seen in The CW’s Arrow. However, Tabitha will be a departure from the traditional Tigress, likely losing her superhuman aspects and toting a bullwhip rather than a crossbow.

It’s interesting to note the relationship between the characters Tigress and Huntress. In the comics, the second incarnation of Tigress in the timeline, Paula Brooks, eventually goes on to become the character Huntress before giving birth to Artemis Crock. While Tabitha Galavan is a departure from the character, it presents the showrunners with an interesting opportunity to introduce another version of Huntress into the series.

More likely, the choice to have Tabitha wield a bullwhip over a crossbow will play into Selina Kyle’s origin stories. Catwoman is famous for wielding a variety of whips and it would be fitting for Tigress to introduce the young Selina to the weapon.

James Frain and Jessica Lucas join new series regulars Lucius Fox (Chris Chalk), Dr. Leslie Thompkins (Morena Baccarin), and the above mentioned Harvey Dent in Gotham‘s swelling ranks of recurring characters. Next season promises to be crowded with characters DC fans have come to know and love.

Gotham returns for its second season on September 21st, 2015.
