Fox’s Batman prequel series Gotham hasn’t been shy about coming up with original villains (such as last week’s Spirit of the Goat), but the show also offers frequent glimpses of classic Batman friends and enemiesy. Penguin stands out as the most prominently featured villain (and ally?) of Detective Jim Gordon in the series, but characters like Poison Ivy, the Riddler and Catwoman have also been given the occasional spotlight.

Poison Ivy is a young girl called Ivy Pepper in this version of Gotham‘s origin story, and the fact that she’s too young to really be an antagonist might be why the character hasn’t been seen since the pilot episode. Gotham still has its share of kid characters (with young Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle already crossing paths), and now it looks like the introduction of another pint-sized villain is right around the corner.

Executive producer Danny Cannon revealed the upcoming introduction of Jonathan Crane AKA Scarecrow during a panel at Comikaze over the weekend, as reported by Zap2It. Cannon explained that the character will be seen as a child who will go on to inherit the Scarecrow moniker from his father, who will presumably be one of the criminals that Jim Gordon has to catch.

Gotham City has already been subjected to chemical warfare in the fifth episode, ‘Viper‘, in which citizens were gifted with a new street drug that made them preternaturally strong before turning their bones into jelly. That is to say, the writers might want to leave a little bit of breathing room between that episode and the introduction of Scarecrow’s father – at least, if he uses the same fear gas that his son ends up inflicting on people.

There’s now breathing room to spare in the show’s debut season, since Gotham has received a full season order from Fox that demands an additional six episodes in the the first season, thanks to its strong debut. During NYCC Victor Zsasz and Harvey Dent were confirmed to appear in episode 7 and episode 9, respectively, so it’s likely that the Scarecrow episode will come after those two, perhaps as one of the six extra episodes.

Scarecrow’s most recent on-screen portrayal was in The Dark Knight Rises, where Cillian Murphy (briefly) reprised his role from Batman Begins. The character is also one of the main antagonists in Batman: Arkham Knight, Rocksteady Studios’ upcoming video game sequel to Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City. It’s safe to say that the character is still fresh in everyone’s minds, and it will be interesting to see Gotham’s take on Jonathan Crane as a child. Let’s just hope it’s a bit more subtle than the portrayal of young Edward Nygma.

Gotham airs Mondays at 8pm on FOX.
