Fox’s Gotham is the first of this fall’s bunch of comic-book inspired television shows, and while we’re just getting to know this take on a pre-Batman Gotham City, the early consensus is fairly positive (read our review of the show’s pilot). The series’ latest trailer teases the eventual appearance of even more famous Batman villains, and we know who will be playing tragic hero-turned-psycho Harvey Dent, a.k.a. the dreaded Two-Face.

Now, a new featurette – which you can watch above – focuses on two supporting players within the show’s cast: GCPD detectives Renee Montoya (Victoria Cartagena) and Crispus Allen (Andrew Stewart-Jones). The show’s first two episodes have established Montoya and Allen as steely, straight-laced cops and mirror images of main characters Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue).

While fans might have expected Gordon to serve as Gotham‘s upright, moral conscious, we’ve already seen how the character is willing to at least act like he’s on board with the GCPD’s shady “understanding” with crime boss Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith). Gordon is finding his way toward a middle way, between Harvey Bullock’s lazy gray morality and the straight-arrow, black-and-white perspective personified by Montoya and Allen.

The two characters have somewhat disparate origins, debuting in different continuities of the Batman universe (Montoya was created for Batman: The Animated Series and Allen first appeared in Detective Comics,) but they became partners in the Gotham Central comic books, which is something of an inspiration for Gotham. Both Allen and Montoya also take on their own superhero mantles in the comics – Allen as a host for The Spectre and Montoya as vigilante The Question.

While we shouldn’t expect those two alter-egos to appear in Gotham, Allen and Montoya serve as countermeasures to Gordon and Bullock, who are walking the same kind of narrow path between right and wrong that young Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) will eventually experience. As they watch Gordon, the audience will have to question what is more important: the greater good or the law? We’ll find out who is eventually in the right as the series progresses.

Gotham returns next Tuesday with “The Balloon Man” @8pm on FOX.
