Unlike the 1998 Godzilla movie, the 2014 reboot featuring the fire-breathing monster was both critically and commercially successful, so understandably a sequel was ordered soon after release. While Godzilla 2, a.k.a. Godzilla: King of the Monsters, has been dealing with a number of behind-the-scenes shakeups over the last year, there's hasn't been any news on who will be in the cast. That changed today, as it's been announced that Stranger Things' Millie Bobby Brown has been brought aboard as the sequel's first star.

It was announced earlier today that Brown has closed a deal with Legendary Entertainment to appear in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. No details were provided about who she'll be playing, but given her rising stardom thanks to her performance as the telekinetic Eleven in the Netflix series Stranger Things, the character will likely be someone prominent. This will be Brown's first major motion picture appearance, while her other TV credits include Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, Modern Family, NCIS and Grey's Anatomy.

Even though people go to Godzilla movies to see the eponymous monster wreak havoc in a major metropolitan area, be it Tokyo or San Francisco, the stories still often call for human characters to ground the narrative. For 2014's Godzilla, Bryan Cranston's Joseph Brody, Aaron Taylor-Johnson's Ford Brody, Elizabeth Olsen Elle Brody and Ken Watanabe's Dr. Ishiro Serizawa were among the principal players, and we watched Godzilla's reign of terror and later battle with the MUTOs from their perspective. There hasn't been any word yet on if any folks from the last movie will return for Godzilla: King of the Monsters, but with Millie Bobby Brown being added on, now begins the steady stream of news about other actors who will join her. It's hard to even begin to speculate on how Brown's character will be involved, but I suspect this won't be an instance of the young girl befriending the terrifying monster. Godzilla has more important things to do then have his heart opened up by a middle-schooler.

Not only was 2014's Godzilla the second American reboot featuring the reptilian menace, it also kicked off the MonsterVerse, the world which Godzilla shares with King Kong and a number of other freaky creatures. No plot details for the sequel have been revealed yet, but Krampus director Michael Dougherty will helm the flick, and he also co-wrote the script with Zach Shields. A year after Godzilla: King of the Monsters' release, Godzilla will return to the big screen to clash with King Kong in Godzilla vs. Kong.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters will rampage into theaters on March 22, 2019. Let us know what you think of Mille Bobby Brown's casting in the comments below.
