Gal Gadot to Play Hedy Lamarr in a Showtime Limited Series

Wonder Woman’s Gal Gadot is nearing a deal to star in and executive produce a limited series for Showtime centered on Hollywood movie actress and inventor Hedy Lamarr. Interest in the fascinating life of Lamarr has been rekindled thanks to last year’s documentary Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story, which detailed Lamarr's role in inventing a technology that would later pave the way for WiFi. Lamarr, sadly, never received proper recognition for her off-screen accomplishments during her lifetime.

Born Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler in Vienna in 1914, Lamarr first came to the world’s attention thanks to her appearance in the semi-risque Czech art film Ecstasy, released in 1933. Lamarr later made the jump to Hollywood, making her English-language debut opposite Charles Boyer in the classic Algiers. The glamorous Lamarr would star alongside all the MGM greats, including Clark Gable, Jimmy Stewart, and Spencer Tracy, throughout the late '30s and into the '40s. But it was her work alongside her friend George Antheil, inventing a radio-controlled torpedo technology that could defeat German jamming methods, that would ultimately prove to be her greatest contribution to the world, as the technology would later form the partial basis for Bluetooth and WiFi.

As reported by Variety, the amazing life of Hedy Lamarr may soon come to Showtime as a limited series, and Gal Gadot is currently in talks to take on the lead role. The Affair creator Sarah Treem reportedly will tackle executive producer duties alongside Gadot, together with Gadot’s husband Jaron Varsano and The Handmaid’s Tale producer Warren Littlefield. Showtime has not yet officially picked up the series.

A former Miss Israel, Gadot began her movie career as Gisele in 2009’s Fast & Furious, later returning to play the character in the next three sequels. Gadot made her first appearance as Diana Prince aka Wonder Woman in 2016’s Batman V Superman – Dawn of Justice. The Wonder Woman standalone film released in 2017 would go on to become a massive blockbuster success, grossing $821 million worldwide, while also propelling Gadot to super-stardom. Gadot played Wonder Woman again in 2017’s Justice League, and will reprise the role in 2019’s Wonder Woman 1984. But superhero movies aren't the only projects on her plate. Gadot has also lined up a role alongside Dwayne Johnson in Rawson Marshall Thurber’s Red Notice. And now, she will also appear in a limited series on Showtime.

Like so many of today’s biggest stars, Gal Gadot has no problem leaping back and forth between the world of blockbuster movies and prestige television projects. Showtime’s Hedy Lamarr series would give Gadot a chance to stretch her acting muscles by playing a woman who truly was a wonder in a real life sense. Lamarr’s journey from childhood in Austria, through her experiences in Nazi Germany, on to her time in Hollywood and her unlikely but amazing detour into science and invention is the stuff of genuine legend.
