Gal Gadot is named 2017’s highest-grossing actress thanks to her roles in Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman and Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Gadot made her debut as Diana Prince, aka Wonder Woman, in Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016, and she reprised her role in the Jenkins-helmed solo movie in June 2017 before uniting with the rest of the world’s finest heroes – Batman (Ben Affleck), Superman (Henry Cavill), Flash (Ezra Miller), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), and Cyborg (Ray Fisher) – in Snyder’s Justice League in November 2017.

Wonder Woman came on the heels of multiple DC critical disasters and box office letdowns, but it managed to take all that negativity in its stride and outperform all expectations, both critically and commercially. Wonder Woman is currently Rotten Tomatoes’ highest-rated superhero movie of all-time, besting films such as Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok and Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. It’s also passed Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man film to become the highest-grossing superhero origin movie ever to release. Unfortunately, Gadot’s presence wasn’t strong enough to catapult Justice League into box office glory. The superhero team-up film is no longer expected to top Man of Steel‘s 2013 gross. Still, the movie earned enough to propel’s Gadot’s total box office cume in 2017.

Forbes reports that Gal Gadot is the highest-grossing actress of 2017. She amassed a total box office gross of approximately $1.473 billion this year, comprised of Wonder Woman‘s record-breaking $821.8 million gross and Justice League‘s $652 million (so far). While she’s the highest-grossing actress, she’s actually the third highest-grossing actor of 2017, behind The Fate of the Furious co-stars Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel, who earned approximately $1.5 and $1.6 billion, respectively.

Wonder Woman’s unprecedented success slingshotted Gadot into global stardom. In fact, the actress’ name was mentioned so much – and pronounced incorrectly by millions of Americans – that “Gal Gadot” earned a spot on the year’s most mispronounced words. For those that don’t know, the name is pronounced with a soft “t” (gah-dott). The name appeared alongside other names and words such as the chronic illness Fibromyalgia, Weinstein, and Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea.

Considering that Justice League significantly underperformed at the global box office, if the DC Comics movie earned as much as people expected it to (or, at least as much as it arguably should’ve earned), it’s certainly possible that Gadot would’ve become the year’s highest-grossing star overall since she was only $200 million shy of the top spot. But she may have to wait until Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 2 hits theaters in 2019 to earn that title.
