The cast and creators of Futurama are returning for a brand new podcast episode, along with a new mobile game to unlock sneak peeks from the show. Star Wars, Star Trek, Doctor Who and The X-Files are amongst some of the most popular science fiction franchises of all time, but when it comes to animated sci-fi, Futurama holds the top spot. Created in 1999 by The Simpsons‘ Matt Groening, the series follows the adventures of a present-day New York City pizza delivery boy, Philip J. Fry, who after being cryogenically frozen awakens in the retro-futuristic 31st century. It aired for four seasons on FOX, before moving to Comedy Central after a five-year hiatus and ending in 2013.


Futurama, however, never stays dead for too long, and a brand new episode is now in the works. The cast and creators of the original series have joined forces with video game studio TinyCo and The Nerdist Podcast’s Chris Hardwick to not only debut a special radioplay episode on September 14th but also a new mobile game that includes bonus content which players can unlock to get a sneak peek at the show’s return.

Futurama: Worlds of Tomorrow, the new mobile game from TinyCo, takes players across the universe in search of ancient alien artifacts to restore the fabric of spacetime after it is transformed by the one and only Hypnotoad. Yet it’s not just another tie-in mobile game; it’s also a fully-produced, brand new adventure written by Matt Groening, David X. Cohen, and the Futurama writers. It looks like TinyCo and the cast and creators of Futuruma have gone all out with the new game, creating a fun, exciting adaptation for fans to once again feel like they’re part of this very special world. You can travel the streets of New New York or the galaxy, while playing as the characters you know and love from the series. Gameplay consists of fights with aliens, building the city and going on missions. Along the way, users can receive exclusive teaser content and unlock in-game sneak peeks from the podcast episode.


Plus the Futurama reunion is being called a double episode, so that means even more wacky, zany fun than a regular installment of The Nerdist Podcast. There’s also reports of even more surprises in store for listeners, too. Whether those surprises will be Futurama related, we’ll have to wait and see. For now, we have less than a week to find out, and in the meantime, a whole world awaits.
