‘The Flash’ Premiere is The CW’s Most-Watched Telecast Ever
Though comic book adaptations have already taken over movies, they’re just starting to stake their claim on television as well. Besides Arrow and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., there’s Constantine and The Flash, as well (with shows like Agent Carter, Daredevil, Supergirl, Titans, and more waiting in the wings).
Speaking of The Flash, it’s one of the more well-reviewed new shows of the 2014 season, having been praised for its energy, its whimsy, and its optimism, which is sometimes in stark contrast to its parent show, Arrow. That shift in tone and style seems to have been an excellent move, as The Flash‘s pilot is now the most-watched CW telecast ever.
According to Nielsen’s estimates (via Variety), “an average audience of 6.8 million” watched the premiere on television. The previously most-watched CW telecast was the 2007 season finale of America’s Next Top Model, which was watched by 6.69 million. When you factor in views from digital platforms, The Flash was watched 13 million times. It’s also the highest-rated in the male demographic.
We know what you’re thinking. Sometimes TV shows can have extremely good ratings for a premiere, only to get a huge drop for the second and third episodes (and beyond). Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is sort of famous for this. It had some of the best ratings of any primetime show last year. Its follow-up episode, unfortunately, didn’t fare so well, and ratings continued to drop throughout season 1.
The Flash, by comparison, did really well in its sophomore episode. Even though it went head-to-head with the World Series on Fox, it managed to retain 88% of its ratings in the key 18-49 demographic.
We’ll have to wait to see how these ratings hold throughout The Flash season 1, but this is obviously pretty great news for The CW. At this point, it’s no wonder why they gave the series a full 23-episode season order.
What say you, Screen Ranters? Are you happy to see The Flash get such good ratings (so far)? Are you enjoying the series? Drop us a line in the comments.
The Flash airs Tuesdays @8pm on The CW.
