First ‘Furious 7′ Trailer: Vengeance Hits Home

Furious 7 suffered a potentially movie-canceling setback with the tragic death of star Paul Walker, with Universal Studios and director James Wan delaying the 2014 release date to April of 2015 and coming up with creative ways to finish the film and provide a worthy sendoff to the late star.

After learning of the film’s official new title last week, we’ve had several Vine-length previews directly from the film’s Twitter account. Now, the film’s first trailer has been released, again courtesy of @FastFurious. You can watch the whole thing above.

Furious 7 brings back Paul Walker, Vin Diesel, Tyrese Gibson, Jordana Brewster, Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges and Dwayne Johnson as they face a new enemy in the form of Jason Statham, the brother of mercenary Owen Shaw (Luke Evans), who is now seeking revenge on the crew for Shaw’s death.

The movie’s straightforward set up is in line with the “gritty, 70′s-style revenge movie” feel director Wan originally had in mind, but the elaborate, car-parachuting bravura opening to the trailer – which appears to be taken from the film’s opening sequence, as O’Connor, Toretto and company rescue an unknown prisoner, putting them in deep peril in the process.

Another question mark is the nature of newcomer Kurt Russell’s character, who in the trailer is seen advising Dom Toretto (Diesel). Russell has hinted that the audience should be suspicious, saying “The character that I play is presented as one thing, but you have a big suspicion that he’s another.” With Russell’s character presented as a sort of father figure for Diesel’s, the notion of a misplaced trust may come into play.

We know already that action stalwart Jason Statham is no one to trifle with, so his presence is a welcome dose of badass to the excitement. The globe-trotting adventure seems to be much more than the streamlined revenge flick we thought we’d get – but from this entertaining first glimpse, all the elements of this cars-and-shooters franchise that people have come to love appear to be in place.

Will the late Paul Walker’s character receive the respectful sendoff the star’s memory deserves? It’s hard to say from this first trailer, but so far we have no reason to think otherwise.

Furious 7 opens in theaters on April 3, 2015.
