Fifty Shades of Grey has the peculiar distinction of being not just one of the most anticipated big screen releases of 2015, but also easily the most ridiculed; and not just for its awkwardly-worded Rating description, either. The footage in the movie’s newly-released TV trailer (watch it above) does a fine job summing up what this film is about – and, in turn, makes the dichotomy in public opinion easier to understand.

The new promo made its TV debut during the 2015 Golden Globes ceremony, which featured Fifty Shades stars Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan as awards presenters. It doesn’t contain much previously-unseen footage, but its mix of material familiar and new once again makes it difficult to say whether 50 Shades will be as silly as many are predicting, or genuinely better than expected.

Fifty Shades of Grey tells the tale of Anastasia Steele (Johnson), a college student who goes in to interview the mysterious, 20-something, billionaire Christian Grey (Dornan), but ends up becoming as strangely obsessed with the enigmatic fellow as he does with her. It might all be rather romantic, were it not for the fact that Christian has a dark side (glimpsed in the latest TV preview) that makes dating him more than a somewhat precarious task.

The Fifty Shades source novel by E.L. James originated as the author’s Twilight fan-fiction, but the movie adaptation looks far more polished and visually-refined than its lineage would indicate it should, courtesy of director Sam Taylor-Johnson (Nowhere Boy) and cinematographer Seamus McGarvey (Atonement, Godzilla (2014)). Scripting duties on the film were handled by multi-award nominee Kelly Marcel (Saving Mr. Banks), so if 50 Shades is as bad as many anticipate then it won’t be because nobody talented worked on the project.

Rounding out the Fifty Shades cast are such folk as Jessica Ehle (Zero Dark Thirty), Luke Grimes (American Sniper), Marcia Gay Harden (The Newsroom), Rachel Skarsten (Lost Girl), and Max Martini (Crisis).

Fifty Shades of Grey opens in U.S. theaters on February 13th, 2015.
