It looks like fans of Noah Hawley’s Emmy-winning Fargo shouldn’t hold their breaths for a forth season. The black comedy-crime drama’s critically acclaimed third season starring the stand-out cast of Ewan McGregor as both brothers Ray and Emmit Stussy, Carrie Coon as policewoman Gloria Burgle, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as ex-convict (and Ray’s fiancée) Nikki Swango and David Thewlis as the strange and mysterious V. M. Varga, could wind up being the show’s last.

So far, each season of Fargo has been written in an anthology format with different storylines, casts and characters taking center stage throughout various time periods in mid-western Minnesota inspired by the 1996 film of the same name. The series has attracted a slew of big names to star in the show throughout it’s seasons including Billy Bob Thornton, Martin Freeman, Bob Odenkirk and Kirsten Dunst.

In a new interview with THR, FX Networks CEO John Landgraf spoke about all things FX related including the possibly of Fargo ending after this season. Here is what Landgraf had to say about Fargo’s future:

“There may never be another Fargo. Unless Noah has an idea for Fargo that he thinks he can make as good as the prior three. I think once people get to the end of this [season] they will find that it is thematically different. It’s really about the moment we live in now.”

It’s not a real hint at cancellation or even doubt on behalf of the network, but Landgraf’s comments do make it sound like no Season 4 is planned at the moment and that it all hinges on Hawley, who has really been the mastermind of the series.

This season, starring McGregor, revolves around a feud between two brothers: Ray Stussy, the parking lot king of Minnesota, and Ray Stussy, a less successful probation officer (both played by McGregor). With Ray recently engaged one of his ex-parolees Nikki Swango and wishing for a better life, he set’s off a change of unfortunate events (including a lot of murder officer Gloria Burgle is investigating) by hiring another ex-convict to steal Ray’s valuable vintage stamp.

The run has received universal acclaim from critics thanks to McGregor’s dual performance as both very different brothers Ray and Emmit, so it is surprising to learn from Landgraf that such a hit program for FX may not be returning for a fourth season. That being said, there have been some complaints about this season starting off too slow in comparison to previous seasons so it may be best to end Fargo on a high note as opposed to dragging the series out.
