You’ll never see most of them. But that doesn’t mean they don’t exist—dozens of first episodes of prospective TV shows, all written, cast, shot and full of hope (and, largely, pretty lousy).

Some will end up on the 2015-16 schedule as the shiny new broadcast lineup. Others will vanish into tax write-off infamy. We’re still rooting for the big, traditional networks to put their pilots online, like Amazon, so we can properly judge them—rather than trusting network executives and mall focus groups to decide what gets on the air. (That’s how we end up with Bad Judge). Until then, we’ll just have to analyze each title based on its description.

The biggest oil discovery in American history (bigger than Texas and as big as Saudi Arabia) has triggered a geopolitical shift and an economic boom in North Dakota on a scale not seen since the American 1849 Gold Rush. The drama tracks the epic pilgrimage of a young, ambitious couple to the oil fields of the Bakken seeking their fortune and a better life, following their trials and tribulations in a modern day “Wild West”, they negotiate a colorful ensemble of roughnecks, grifters, oil barons, criminals, and fellow prospectors against a stark and beautiful backdrop. A thriller about a woman about to get married and about to get conned. Unbeknownst to her slippery fiancé, our heroine–who investigates fraud for a living–is not all she claims to be. And when the fiancé’s expertly planned con collides with her perfectly constructed lies, they plunge into a dangerous game of cat and mouse. A character-driven, true-crime procedural that explores sex, politics and popular culture across various noteworthy eras in L.A. history. Season one focuses on two LA cops in search for a Bonnie & Clyde-esque serial killing team amidst the rock-and-roll, coke-infused revelry of the 1980s Sunset Strip. Based on the Turkish series Son, the drama follows Lauren Marks, who believes she is leading a perfect life until it’s ripped apart by one simple twist of fate. The return of a local politician’s young son, formerly presumed dead after disappearing over a decade earlier, sends shockwaves through his tight knit family. But as the mysterious young man is welcomed back into his community, the neighbor sitting in jail for his murder is released and the cop responsible is forced to reexamine what truly happened so many years ago. Jenna Bans will write and executive-produce with David Hoberman, Todd Lieberman and Laurie Zaks.

The Brainy Bunch
Through a combination of genetics and dynamic home schooling, Kip and Mona Lisa Mitchell find themselves raising extraordinarily intelligent kids. When Kip returns home from the military to be a stay at home dad, he experiences firsthand the challenges of parenting kids who have genius IQ’s, but limited life and social skills. Wendy and Lizzie Molyneux will write and executive-produce the project inspired by the book of the same title by Kip and Mona Lisa Harding.

Delores & Jermaine
Based on the life of comedian Jermaine Fowler, this multi-camera comedy features an odd couple for the new generation. Fowler stars as a millennial with big ideas, but very little drive, who moves in with his estranged grandmother, a strict, football-loving, former D.C. cop who needs his youthful enthusiasm in her life as much as he needs her old school parenting. Danny Chun and Fowler will write and executive-produce with Michael Rotenberg and Avi Gilbert.

Dr. Ken
Community’s Ken Jeong stars as a frustrated HMO doctor juggling medicine, marriage and parenting—and succeeding at none of them.

Family Fortune
A comedy about a popular gym teacher (Fortune Feimster) in Georgia who comes out of the closet to her close-knit group of family and friends. What she doesn’t realize is that she will also have to deal with her bickering and happily divorced parents also “coming out” that they are sleeping together again. Feimster and Matt Hubbard will write and executive-produce with Robert Carlock and Tina Fey.

The 46 Percenters
An anti-romantic, romantic comedy about the 46-percent of the population who choose to stay married, told through the POV of three couples. Sherry Bilsing-Graham and Ellen Kreamer will write and executive-produce.

Based on the Israeli series Bilti Hafich, the partially improvised comedy centers on Andy (Justin Long) and Sarah, a somewhat eccentric, self-absorbed couple, and their trials and tribulations, many of which they bring on themselves. Original series co-creator Segahl Avin will write and executive-produce with Peter Tolan and Michael Wimer.

The King of 7B
In this ensemble comedy, an agoraphobic recluse ventures outside for the first time in 20 years when he spies what could be his soul mate moving into the building across the street, Prentiss Porter will embark on an incredible journey of discovery right outside his front door. Based on the life of boundary-pushing columnist Dan Savage, a picture perfect family is turned upside down when the youngest son comes out of the closet. What seems like the end of their idyllic life turns out to be the beginning of a bright new chapter when everyone stops pretending to be perfect and actually starts being real. David Windsor and Casey Johnson will write and executive-produce with Savage, Brian Pines and Dan McDermott.

Narrated by Johnny Knoxville and based on his life, this family comedy follows the exploits of 12- year-old Johnny navigating the “outlaw culture” of his family and small hometown of Knoxville, TN., and documents the childhood experiences that inspired him to become one of the greatest pranksters of a generation. Victor Fresco will write and executive-produce with Knoxville and Michael Rotenberg.

Code Black
Medical drama set in the busiest and most notorious ER in the nation – LA County Hospital – where the extraordinary staff confronts a broken system in order to protect their ideals and the patients who need them the most. Based on the 2011 feature starring Bradley Cooper, the drama follows Brian Sinclair as he discovers the power of the mysterious drug NZT, and is coerced into using his newfound drug-enhanced abilities to solve weekly cases for the FBI. A stoic, by-the-book Hong Kong police officer is assigned to a case in Los Angeles where he’s forced to work with a cocky African-American LAPD officer who has no interest in a partner. Upon leaving prison, a thirty-something con man takes cover from his past by assuming the identity of a cellmate. “Sneaky Pete” then hides out from his debtors while working for his new “family’s” bail bond business. There he uses his considerable charm and criminal prowess to take down bad guys far worse than himself, partnering with a very attractive female “cousin,” who has her suspicions about his real motives. Despite being constantly surrounded by death, Rosewood is obsessed with life and savors every moment. His eternal optimism will frustrate the cynical female detective he often works with, but she can’t argue with the results that his unique perspective provides. When a hard-working guy (Kevin Connolly) lands his ultimate dream job hosting a fantasy football show, he’s forced to navigate office politics while becoming the star he never thought he could be. 48 Hours ‘Til Monday

Rob Lowe stars as beloved TV lawyer Dean Sanderson (aka “The Grinder”). When his long-running hit series comes to an end, he finds himself at a crossroads in life and decides to move back to his small hometown thinking he has the experience to take over his family’s law firm.
