Justice League star Ezra Miller, who plays the DC Extended Universe’s Barry Allen aka The Flash, compares his character to a fanboy of his fellow heroes. Barry Allen – like his fellow heroes, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck), Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa), Diana Prince (Gal Gadot), and Victor Stone (Ray Fisher) – made his debut in the DCEU launchpad, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, last year. Though his introduction was limited to some surveillance camera footage, The Flash made a proper debut in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, utilizing his superspeed and donning the character’s iconic red costume to capture Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney).

This year, Warner Bros. is premiering two DCEU entries. The first, Wonder Woman, hit theaters earlier this summer and acted as an origin story for its titular superhero. The second film will be Zack Snyder’s Justice League, which unites Wonder Woman, Batman, Cyborg, Aquaman, and The Flash – as well as, presumably Henry Cavill’s Superman – in a fight against Steppenwolf (Ciarán Hinds). Aside from Batman and Wonder Woman, who first teamed up together during Batman V Superman, Justice League will see the characters united for the first time.

In an interview with Total Film Magazine, Miller spoke about what fans can expect from the character of Barry Allen as he suits up to fight alongside superheroes who have been protecting humanity for much longer than him – and, in the case of Wonder Woman, longer than he’s even been alive. Miller said:

“He’s [like] the 13-year-old Metallica fan, and Metallica says, ‘We lost our drummer in a freak accident. We need you to play drums, bro!’ [And he’s like] ‘I don’t even have drumsticks!'”

This particular dynamic between Flash and his fellow superheroes has been teased since the first teaser for Justice League debuted at San Diego Comic-Con in 2016. The video featured a scene in which Barry Allen clearly expresses fan enthusiasm when learning Bruce Wayne is Batman. Plus, the extent to which Barry feels out of his depth alongside his fellow team members was stated in the Justice League trailer that was unveiled at SDCC this year. Barry points out that he’s not really a fighter, at least not quite like Batman and Wonder Woman. So, we’ve seen a bit of what Miller is teasing when he compares Barry to a young Metallica fan being called on to replace their drummer.

Still, we likely won’t learn all of what to expect from Barry’s character arc in Justice League until much closer to the film’s release date. Important Flash characters set to make their DCEU debut in Justice League include Iris West (Kiersey Clemons) and Barry’s father Henry Allen (Billy Crudup), so they’ll undoubtedly factor into the hero’s storyline. But until we learn more, we can at least rest assured that the dynamic between Flash and the other heroes as teased in the trailers – which has been mostly positively received – will be a theme of the whole Justice League movie.
