Spoilers ahead for Season 7 of Game of Thrones.

Season 7 of Game of Thrones was a doozy. Perhaps no storyline was as anticipated as the subject of Jon Snow's parentage. Season 6 showed that Ned wasn't the father, and Season 7's finale revealed that Jon is the true born child of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen, and therefore the air to The Iron Throne. Looking back on the show's long history, this was actually hinted a few times, one of which was when Davos was being taught how to read by Princess Shireen. In fact, the very first word she taught him was "Aegon", which is actually Jon's given name by his mother.

This was recently caught by some eagle eye fans, and proves just how far ahead Game of Thrones has been planning its later seasons. The use of the word Aegon is a bold and purposeful choice to tease the audience, although it went over our heads at the time. When Davos actor Liam Cunningham was recently asked if he knew the scene's importance at the time, he said:

"No, are you kidding me? I don't know what the hell's gonna happen from one episode to the next. That's testament to how good the writing is on that, too. After seven seasons, people are still asking the same question they asked in Season 1. 'Who do you think is gonna end up on the throne?'"

Well, now I don't feel as bad. Because not even Davos himself was aware of the scene's significance back in Season 3. Since Jon's true parentage is a secret that Game of Thrones' creators have been keeping since the show began, there was no way they could reveal the truth to the actors. Game of Thrones is already the most pirated show on television, and has had a slew of leaks, at the fault of both HBO and outside forces. So revealing that sensitive information years before its eventual appearance on the show just doesn't seem logical.

But Liam Cunningham does seem aware of how deliberately Game of Thrones is produced. So while he's not always hep to the easter eggs that are being included in the show, Cunningham knows that these types of references have been peppered into the series. He recently told Huffington Post,

"Yeah, they're very good at that sort of thing. David [Benioff] and Dan [Weiss] plant little Easter eggs there if you want to see them."

Considering that there's just one short season of Game of Thrones left, I'm sure this isn't the last Easter egg that will come to make sense. Whoever ends up on the Iron Thrones has probably been teased before, and fans will likely be dissecting every frame of Season 8 after the final has aired.
