What happens if you mashed up Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Mad Max, District 9, and Quentin Tarantino, then shoved the results into a Blockbuster Video? You’d get The Osiris Child: Science Fiction Volume One, a crazy Australian scifi throwback. Want proof? Check out the first trailer now.

If that title sounds familiar, it’s because we reviewed it last year when the film played Fantastic Fest. If it doesn’t sound familiar, watch the trailer and all will become clear.

Like I said, The Osiris Child is a mash-up of many, many familiar science fiction tropes. Space battles, high-tech guns, weird bars, hulking aliens... the film has it all. And yet, it’s a relatively low-budget Australian film with only a few recognizable stars (Kellen Lutz, Temuera Morrison, Rachel Griffiths).

The film opens in Australia later this month but does not yet have a US distributor. I hope it gets one. While reviews out of the festival were decidedly mixed, I enjoyed most of the film quite a lot, even if it wasn’t exactly original. Director Shane Abbess infuses everything with such care and sincerity that it’s hard not to get wrapped up in his world, and I’d love to see more of it. Here’s my full review of the film.
