If there’s something strange in your neighborhood, who are you going to call? Well, it’s not Emma Stone, that’s for sure. The actress, who was once rumored for a pivotal role in the next Ghostbusters installment, has reportedly passed on Ghostbusters 3.

Back in November we reported when rumors started to circulate about Emma Stone and Jonah Hill were being courted for Ghostbuster 3. Although the casting choices felt a bit odd, it was still somewhat comforting that this installment may be finally getting off the ground. The two certainly could have handled the comedic scenarios of the installment, but now it looks like Hill is on his own if he chooses to take a role in the series.

As far as Emma Stone is concerned, Bloody Disgusting, is reporting that Stone is passing on the role of Anna, while Hill’s offer for the role of Jeremy is still on the table. So far there hasn’t been any word from Columbia, but sources are coming forward and saying that Sony will only green light the next Ghostbusters installment if two major stars are in the film.

Although Dan Aykroyd is assumed to still be involved, he’s probably not someone that the younger generation can identify with; at least not the demographic that the studio needs to pull in the money from for the next installment. Although fans of the other Ghostbusters films will go to see the film out of nostalgia, that can only carry Ghostbusters 3 so far, especially if we’re assuming that they have a big budget.

As it stands as far as the production end, Ivan Reitman is still in the director’s chair. If reports about the plot are to believed, it doesn’t look like the studio is straying from the former success of the films.

The plot of Ghostbusters 3 is listed as follows:

“It follows a ragtag group of paranormal researchers who reopen their notorious ghost removal service, and a new generation of Ghostbusters is brought on board to be green slimed and trained to contain the mischievous spirits.”

Who do you think would make a good replacement for Emma Stone?
