Max Minghella's directorial debut also stars Zlatko Buric, Rebecca Hall, Agnieszka Grochowska, Clara Rugaard, Millie Brady, Olive Gray and Jordan Stephens.

The first trailer for Max Minghella's directorial debut, Teen Spirit, was released on Thursday.

The musical drama follows Violet (Elle Fanning), a shy teenage girl from a small European town, who dreams of making it big as a pop singer. With the help of an unlikely mentor (Zlatko Buric), Violet enters an international singing competition. The experience tests her integrity, talent and ambition.

The cast also includes Rebecca Hall, Agnieszka Grochowska, Clara Rugaard, Millie Brady, Olive Gray and Jordan Stephens.

The trailer opens with brief clips that show Violet's everyday life: working at a restaurant, moving bales of hay and walking alongside a horse.

She soon enters the competition and auditions with a cover of Robyn's "Dancing on My Own." Clips of the audition process follow as Violet and others show off their dance abilities and take headshots.

She later teams up with her new mentor Vlad, who explains how fierce the competition is. Footage of the two practicing vocal exercises are juxtaposed with shots of Violet onstage and her spending time with friends.

The trailer continues with a montage that highlights Violet's experience onstage and behind the scenes of the singing competition. "Life comes down to these moments, Violet," says Hall's character. "Don't take them for granted."

Fanning performs many musical numbers throughout the film, including songs by Ellie Goulding, Tegan & Sara, Annie Lennox, Orbital, Sigrid, Carly Rae Jepsen and Jack Antonoff. Songs by Ariana Grande, Katy Perry, Grimes, The Undertones, Aqua, Alice Deejay, Whigfield, Major Lazer and No Doubt are also included on the soundtrack.

In addition to directing, Minghella penned the script for the film.

Teen Spirit debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. It will hit theaters on April 5. Watch the full trailer below.
