Edge of Tomorrow 2 Titled Live Die Repeat and Repeat; Emily Blunt Returning

Edge of Tomorrow 2 has a title and a returning original cast member. Doug Liman’s action-sci-fi was a critical hit back in 2014, with its delectable concept of Tom Cruise having to re-live the same day of combat over and over explored to its full potential. It was a more moderate box office success but did still manage to double its budget (the universally accepted mark for breaking even).

A sequel has thus been on the cards since the first film hit, and although development has been slow Liman has been confirmed to return as director and Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse, best known for Jesse Owens biopic Race, are writing the screenplay based on an original story idea Tom Cruise pitched to original screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie (who’s worked with the actor on Jack Reacher and Mission: Impossible). Liman’s currently working on psychological thriller The Wall, but is still planning to return to the world of Edge.

While promoting his latest, Liman revealed to Collider that while no firm plans are set, the film has a new title – Live Die Repeat and Repeat – and that Emily Blunt is on board:

“We have an amazing story! It’s incredible! Way better than the first film, and I obviously loved the first film. It will be called Live Die Repeat and Repeat. Tom [Cruise] is excited about it, and Emily Blunt is excited about it. The big question is just when we’ll do it. But it’s not an if, it’s a when.”

If that name sounds a bit left-field, it’s mainly because of the strange title development of the original film. Based on the book All You Need It Kill, it became Edge of Tomorrow during production and, in a bid to increase home sales, was further retitled to Live Die Repeat when it was released on DVD. This sequel title would suggest that final name is what the film is supposed to be known by going forward.

Repeat and Repeat may also provide something of a clue towards the movie’s plot. The details of Cruise’s pitch for Edge 2 are a closely guarded secret, but at each opportunity (including this latest case) Liman’s been keen to hype it up, at one point saying “it’s going to revolutionize how people make sequels”. The notion of repeating over and over would point towards a film that goes back to original, further chiming with previous comments the film is both a sequel and prequel.

Aside from the title, the other development here is that Emily Blunt, who showcased her previously unseen action chops in the original, is excited to return. The actress was previously unsure if she would be back, but with her Rita Vrataski reportedly essential to that mysterious story, it’s a very positive development to hear she’s changed her mind.

When exactly Live Die Repeat and Repeat will enter production is unclear – all three core players have jam-packed schedules – but Liman’s new comments definitely put it as a priority.
