As most of our readers know, some of Hollywood’s most iconic franchises will be making their returns to the big screen this year. This trend pertains mainly to the sci-fi genre, with works such as Jurassic World, Terminator: Genisys, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens opening in the coming months.

However, there are also some revivals for classic comedies being brought back as well, most prominently Ghostbusters, but that’s far from the only 1980s property aiming for a comeback. A new Beverly Hills Cop project has been coming through the pipeline for some time; first as an aborted TV series and now a fourth feature film.

Word of a Beverly Hills Cop 4 has actually been going around for years, but now actual progress is being made. Brett Ratner is set to direct, and Paramount is aiming for a March 2016 premiere for the long-delayed sequel; still, fans of the series shouldn’t get too excited yet. That’s because the franchise’s main player, star Eddie Murphy, hasn’t officially committed to the project – despite rumors of the contrary.

When speaking to Rolling Stone about his potential involvement, Murphy said that he’s still waiting for a quality script to come into fruition before he signs on:

“Nah, they still trying to get that script right. I’m not doing a ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ unless they have a really incredible script. I’ve read a couple things that look like they can make some paper. But I’m not doing a sh*tty movie just to make some paper. The sh*t got to be right.”

Murphy hasn’t appeared in a theatrically released film since 2012′s A Thousand Words, which was just the latest in a long line of flops and underwhelming movies for the superstar comedian. While it may be tempting for him to sign on to a production just to make a quick buck, it is relieving to hear that he is taking the artistic merits of any future career moves into consideration before he signs on for anything else – especially a character that is so well-loved. After all, this may be an easier route for him to reclaim his former glory days as opposed to jumping at any opportunity.

While Murphy is still unsure about the prospects of Axel Foley’s next misadventure, the executives at Paramount seemingly have a different stance. According to MLive, Michigan Film Office spokeswoman Michelle Grinnell commented that the studio is still on track to begin principal photography this spring in order to keep their previously scheduled March 2016 release date.

So it appears that the filmmakers are gearing up to move to the next stage of development with or without Axel Foley himself, which would morph Beverly Hills Cop 4 into a reboot of sorts with a new lead – assuming Murphy passes entirely.

That said, if writers Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec are still trying to crack the script, a delay in the production schedule could be caused, which honestly wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world. Where we stand right now, Paramount is serving this movie as a sacrificial box office lamb by having it go head-to-head with Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, and they will most likely want to move from what is almost sure to be a blockbuster weekend for Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment.

Beverly Hills Cop is currently scheduled to hit theaters March 25, 2016.
