Dunkirk Total Film Cover Spotlights Christopher Nolan’s Latest

Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk takes the cover of the latest issue of Total Film magazine, along with a special celebration of the director’s filmography so far. The Batman Begins helmer shot to fame with his Dark Knight trilogy, before going on to work on huge hits Inception and Interstellar, and it looks like he is set for another success this year with Dunkirk.

The upcoming film is a re-telling of the famous battle of World War II, and will star Tom Hardy, Harry Styles and James D’Arcy among others. It’s some seriously dark subject matter, but Nolan has plenty of experience with dark storytelling, and there’s little doubt he’s up to the task. The biggest surprise hasn’t been that the acclaimed director is tackling a war epic, but that it’s only receiving a PG 13 rating.

Now, Total Film is featuring Dunkirk on the cover of its latest issue, with a behind the scenes feature inside that will give fans a closer look at the movie, reports GamesRadar. The magazine cover features three of the stars on a beach, with the film’s title across the center and the headline, “Exclusive: Dunkirk. On the beaches with Christopher Nolan for his blockbuster epic.” The cover also features a quote from the interview:

“It’s on a colossal scale, but it’s a survival story more than a war film.”

The magazine promises a feature that goes “on location and into the edit suite to meet Nolan and his cast and discover why this is like no war movie you’ve ever seen,” which will presumably include lots of exclusive behind-the-scenes photos of the film set and the actors, as well as interviews with Nolan himself. The newsstand issue also comes with a 46 page retrospective of Nolan’s previous work, not available with the compact/digital editions.

There have already been a few trailers for Dunkirk and some footage released for the film, as well as the usual director interviews (and we can expect more of these in the run up to the film’s release next month), so it’s not clear how much more the interview can reveal. As a historical film, the basic premise of Dunkirk is also already established, although there is plenty of room for shocking twists with the specific characters that Nolan has made the focus of the film. Long-time fans of Nolan are sure to appreciate the retrospective as well as the Dunkirk feature, especially as it promises more interviews with the director about his previous work, making this a very worthwhile read ahead of his latest epic.
