The early reactions for Alien: Covenant are in. In only 14 days, the aliens are back. Alien: Covenant is coming to theaters, telling a part of the story of what happened between the events of Prometheus and Alien. The combination prequel and sequel certainly has fans of the franchise excited for the origins of the Xenomorphs and the fate of the Engineers to be further explored and explained, as well as the return of Michael Fassbender in the dual roles of returning android David and new model Walter, and the answers as to the fate of Elizabeth Shaw.

There is also a brand new group of human characters for the audience to care about and root for – all the while knowing that most of them are almost certainly not going to make it. This story is about a ship called Covenant which is filled with couples, intending to start a new society far from earth. Katherine Waterston, Danny McBride, James Franco, Billy Crudup, Carmen Ejogo, and Jussie Smollett make up just a few of the crew of human beings in danger from the alien threat this time around.

The early reactions to Alien: Covenant have come to Twitter, and they are highly positive. Check out a few of them right here:

#AlienCovenant is an intense, strange and nightmarish continuation of the franchise. A great companion to Prometheus & the Alien mythos.

I don’t think everyone will love Alien: Covenant. Some will probably hate it. It’s a complex film and one you’ll be talking about after.

First impressions. More satisfying than Prometheus. Last act little messy re: the Aliens. Loved the cast and characters. #AlienCovenant

The reviews seem to be generally good, with a lot of praise for the series returning to its horror roots. The original film – Alien – is generally considered among the best horror films ever made. But the sequels have drifted further and further into the sci-fi genre, with horror becoming more of an afterthought, to mixed reviews and results. While a movie about space travel and alien life forms will always have elements of science fiction, it sounds like Covenant is far more focused on being scary, with the science present but not the focus.

Nearly every movie has at least one detractor. In this case, it’s Eric Vespe from Ain’t It Cool News who seems less impressed by the film than his fellow reviewers. While he praises the cast, he’s unsure of the tone. However, Paul Shirey points out that the movie will not be for everyone, due to its complexity.

Such high praise for the sixth movie in a series – or eighth for those counting the two Alien vs Predator spin-off movies – is not terribly common. After so many decades and films, it’s certainly exciting to hear such good things about the film. Since Alien: Covenant is intended to be the second film in a prequel trilogy, the good early reactions certainly could lead to even higher anticipation for the next film in the series.
