For quite some time it seemed as though Dumber and Dumber To – the Farrelly Brothers-directed sequel to their 1994 hit comedy – would end up becoming one of those sequels that’s brought up whenever the original film’s cast and crew start waxing nostalgic (and express the desire to get their old band back together), only without it ever actually happening. Lo and behold, Dumb and Dumber To is now a real thing and will open in theaters next week.

Dumb and Dumber To, which the Farrellys co-wrote alongside Sean Anders and John Morris (Hot Tub Time Machine, We’re the Millers), reunites Lloyd Christmas (Jim Carrey) and Harry Dunne (Jeff Daniels) in real-time, twenty years after their first big adventure (onscreen, anyway). The Dumb and Dumber sequel, as established by its trailer, follows the dim-witted duo as they set out to reunite Harry with the biological daughter that he never knew he had

Question is, now that the directors and stars of Dumb and Dumber are back together, have they brought the funny with them? The Dumb and Dumber clip above, as well as those embedded below, do harken back to its predecessor’s sense of humor, albeit with the sort of culturally-informed jokes and references that you would expect from a comedy releasing in 2014 (see:the Aspergers bit or the cell phone gag, which was also featured heavily in the trailer marketing).

At the same time, though, these scenes seem more reminiscent of a 1990s comedy in terms of their pacing; compared to how quickly something like, say, 22 Jump Street throws jokes at those watching it, this Dumb and Dumber To footage comes off almost sluggish by comparison (and the jokes themselves don’t feel on-point enough to justify that). To be fair, these clips are pretty short and presented without context, and that could make a big difference where it concerns how they play in the movie.

Carrey and Daniels have long been vocal about how much they enjoyed making the first Dumb and Dumber together, and their offscreen sense of camaraderie appears to have resulted in good screen chemistry between them again, in Dumb and Dumber To. That pair ought to do their part to bring the necessary funny and heart to this sequel; the bigger question is whether they Farrellys and their co-writers can do likewise, since their ability to be raunchy is one thing that has never been in doubt about the Farrellys.

Rounding out the Dumb and Dumber To cast are such names as Rob Riggle (21 Jump Street), Laurie Holden (The Walking Dead), and Kathleen Turner (Marley & Me). Feel free and let us know in the comments section if you’re planning to give the film a look, based on what you’ve seen from the marketing so far.

Dumb and Dumber To opens in U.S. theaters on November 14th, 2014.
