When the Dredd reboot released in 2012 the film didn’t immediately score a sequel thanks to its low domestic box office. The home video released raised its profile and quickly the film earned a strong cult following, but any chance at a sequel is still pretty slim. But true fans never say die, and as they continue to clamor for more Dredd, the rumors and speculation of a Dredd 2 never cease.

Right there with those enthusiastic fans is the equally enthused Adi Shankar, producer of The Grey, Lone Survivor, and of course, Dredd. And though Shankar doesn’t see a Dredd sequel as a real possibility, he’s continued his involvement with the property in the form of a new animated miniseries – Judge Dredd: Superfiend. You can watch its first trailer for the miniseries, above.

We hosted a panel with Shankar at New York Comic-Con this year, where he first previewed footage from the new Dredd miniseries - one that adapts the Dark Judges storyline from the 2000 A.D. Dredd comic books, and will be released online for free later this month. Based upon the four horseman of the apocalypse, The Dark Judges (Death, Fear, Fire, and Mortis) are fan favorite characters that many had hoped to eventually see them realized on the big screen (had the feature film franchise continued…).

This trailer for Superfiend only features Death alongside Judge Dredd, but it’s assumed the other three Dark Judges – and their plan for total annihilation of all life – will appear in the actual miniseries. And while it may not be the sequel many are still hoping for, getting a chance to see any of their storyline realized should be a real treat for fans.

When stills from Judge Dredd: Superfiend were first released we noted how the animation style looked reminiscent of MTV’s ’90s animation variety show, Liquid Television, and this trailer only makes that comparison all the more apparent. There is also some CGI in the mix, most noticeable during vehicle chase scenes or when hovering high above Mac Fatties.

What do you make of this first trailer of Judge Dredd: Superfiend? Will it do justice to The Dark Judges storyline? Do you like its mix of different styles of animation? Let us know what you think in the comments below!

Judge Dredd: Superfiend will be released online, for free, next week on Monday, October 27th.
