Although it didn’t quite meet the heights of young adult novel adaptations like Twilight and The Hunger Games, Neil Burger’s coming of age sci-fi tale Divergent performed well enough at the box office following its spring 2014 release. Just as well, since Lionsgate had announced release dates for the sequels months in advance of the first film hitting theaters.

The first of these sequels, Insurgent, will be released almost exactly a year after Divergent and will continue the story of Beatrice “Tris” Prior, the determined teen living in a dystopian society that is ready to hunt her down for the crime of having more than one personality trait. Insurgent sees a reshuffle of talent behind the camera, with a screenplay from The Da Vinci Code writer Akiva Goldsman and Robert Schwentke (RED) taking over directing duties.

Fans of Veronica Roth’s book series will also be able to get even closer to the author’s alternate vision of Chicago in the upcoming sequel, as Lionsgate has announced that Insurgent will be released in 3D thanks to a new partnership with RealD. The news was accompanied by the release of some 3D motion posters for the main characters in the franchise, which have been cropping up on various sites throughout the day.

Insurgent will star Shailene Woodley in the lead role as Tris, accompanied by her friends and allies Four (Theo James), Tori (Maggie Q), Christina (Zoë Kravitz), Caleb (Ansel Elgort), Peter (Miles Teller) and Marcus (Ray Stevenson). Check out the official synopsis below, but be warned that it contains spoilers for Divergent.

Tris and Four are now fugitives on the run, hunted by Jeanine (Kate Winslet), the leader of the power-hungry Erudite elite. Racing against time, they must find out what Tris’s family sacrificed their lives to protect, and why the Erudite leaders will do anything to stop them. Haunted by her past choices but desperate to protect the ones she loves, Tris, with Four at her side, faces one impossible challenge after another as they unlock the truth about the past and ultimately the future of their world.

The fact that the decision has been made this late presumably means that Insurgent will be post-converted to 3D, rather than filmed in native 3D. Post-converted 3D often doesn’t look as good as “the real thing,” in part because films that are post-converted generally aren’t shot with 3D presentation in mind. With that said, those who aren’t a fan of the format will still have the option of seeing Insurgent in 2D instead, and those who can’t get enough of 3D now have another reason to go and see Insurgent in theaters.

Insurgent will release on March 20th, 2015.
