Star Trek: Discovery Season 1 Blu-ray Trailer & Details Revealed

Release date and details of Star Trek: Discovery season 1 on Blu-ray have been revealed, along with a trailer. The latest Star Trek TV venture debuted in 2017 on CBS All Access, revealing new characters, new technology and an over-arching storyline involving a violent war against the Klingon Empire. Set ten years before the events of Star Trek: TOS, the show annoyed some hardcore Trek fans for the way it played fast and loose with Trek canon, but it caught on enough with casual viewers to bring about a second season.

Set mainly aboard the titular starship Discovery, the show focuses on lead character Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), a disgraced officer who finds herself at the center of the Klingon war. The twisty season took the crew of the Discovery on a galaxy-hopping ride via a new propulsion technology called spore drive, and even saw them breaking through the space-time continuum and into the infamous beard-happy Mirror Universe first introduced in the original Trek. With high production values and stunning visuals, Discovery delivered a combination of classic Trek storytelling and sleek modern action, with plenty of wild (and sometimes rather questionable) plot twists along the way.

CBS Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Media Distribution are set to release Star Trek: Discovery season 1 on Blu-ray and DVD on November 13th, 2018 (via StarTrek.com). The four-disc Blu-ray and DVD collections will feature all 15 season 1 episodes, together with featurettes and other extras including cast and crew interviews, behind-the-scenes material, and deleted and extended scenes. See the Blu-ray trailer above.

The list of special features coming to the Blu-ray includes multiple intriguing featurettes that take fans behind the scenes of the show. These include "Discovering Discovery," which explores the casting process through interviews with producers, writers and stars. "Creature Comforts" gives fans a look at the makeup and prosthetics work that went into creating the show’s many great-looking creatures, including the new-look Klingons and the new species the Kelpiens. Another featurette called "A Female Touch" looks at the many women who worked on the show both on-screen and behind-the-scenes. Then there’s "Creating Space," which explores the work of the VFX team as they designed the show’s many impressive ship and planet designs.

Though Discovery may have left some old school Star Trek fans feeling disappointed, there's no doubt the show helped revive the Trek brand with a wider audience, once again making Star Trek part of the pop culture conversation. Season 2 already looks intriguing after the few glimpses afforded fans, including the trailer released at San Diego Comic-Con in July. Among the big developments coming up in season 2 are the arrival of Captain Christopher Pike, after the Discovery's encounter with the Enterprise was teased at the very end of season 1. And most exciting of all is the impending arrival of Spock, who finds himself embroiled in the season's central mystery, and needing his foster sister Michael Burnham to help him.

And yes, Trek fans who are very serious about maintaining continuity between the different series will get answers as to why Spock never mentioned his foster sister in any of the character's previous appearances over five decades. In addition to Star Trek: Discovery season 2, CBS All Access plans a series of short-form spinoff shows built around various Discovery characters, as well as a new series centered on Jean-Luc Picard with Patrick Stewart back in the captain's chair.

Season 1 wasn't that good specifically to canon as it was supposed to be a prequel, but it went so far off into the wrong direction. I don't know if the blu ray will sell.
