Disney’s Emmy-winning original animated TV series Kim Possible is being developed as a live-action movie. Nearly eleven years after the series finale aired in 2007, Disney is already in the process of casting the titular character, a high school girl who leads a secret life as a crime-fighting, James Bond-esque secret agent with the help of her friend Ron Stoppable, his naked mole-rat Rufus, and computer whiz Wade Load.


While there are currently no official plot details, the show’s original creators, Mark McCorkle and Robert Schooley, are back on board for the live-action movie, co-writing the film with The Duff’s Josh Cagan. Zanne Devine, who will executive produce alongside McCorkle and Schooley, is no stranger to female leads dealing with larger-than-life problems. In 2010, she produced the Emma Stone comedy Easy A, and most recently served as executive producer on the Oscar-nominated I, Tonya. Adam B. Stein and Zach Lipovsky, who were both finalists on FOX’s On the Lot (think American Idol, but for filmmakers), will co-direct and co-produce.


Disney Channel’s Worldwide executive VP of original programming Adam Bonnett released an official statement regarding production on the upcoming Kim Possible live-action movie (courtesy of THR):

“Mark and Bob created an enduring character and kids all over the world found a friend in her, an average girl who just happens to spend her off-school hours thwarting evil villains. Although Kim Possible ‘can do anything,’ kids and tweens found that this animated redhead was just like them. As we embark on the fun challenge of making Kim and Ron fully dimensional, I’m thrilled to be working again with Mark and Bob and to welcome the addition of a dynamic creative team — Josh, Zanne, Adam and Zach — into a world where anything is indeed possible.”

Disney produced two feature-length TV movies based on the series (2003’s Kim Possible: A Stitch in Time and 2005’s Kim Possible: So the Drama), but the upcoming film will mark the series’ first attempt at live-action. To date, there have been over 100 Disney Channel Original Movies, and the latest slate, including Tangled: Before Ever After and The Descendants 2, have been successful. Before the live-action Kim Possible movie, the upcoming slate of Disney Channel Original Movies include Zombies, a musical comedy,and a remake of Freaky Friday.


While the original cast – including Christy Carlson Romano, Will Friedle, and John DiMaggio (who voiced Kim’s archnemesis Dr. Drakken) – is too old to portray the characters they voiced in the animated series, this would be a perfect opportunity for some live-action cameos. Friedle, who reprised his role in the Boy Meets World spinoff Girl Meets World back in 2013, appears to have maintained a healthy relationship with Disney, so his chances, especially, seem the most likely.
