According to Gerard Butler, Den of Thieves 2 is set to begin production in early 2022. Den of Thieves was released in 2018. It followed Butler's 'Big Nick' O'Brien, the head of an elite unit within the LA County Sheriff's Department, working to stop the state's most successful bank robbers before they can hit the Federal Reserve Bank. Butler shared the screen with Curtis '50 Cent' Jackson, O'Shea Jackson Jr., and Brian Van Holt. Den of Thieves was written and directed by Christian Gudegast, who previously penned Butler's 2016 Fallen franchise sequel, London Has Fallen. Reviews for Den of Thieves were middling, but it earned enough at the box office to warrant a sequel, which looks to begin filming soon.

While speaking with UNILAD to promote his new film Copshop, Butler shared an update on the status of Den of Thieves 2. Butler then discussed plot details that will see his character traveling to Europe on the hunt for Donnie, O'Shea Jackson Jr.'s character from the first film who got away. The production seems to have also solidified shooting locations as Butler mentioned several destinations, such as London and Marseilles. Check out Butler's comments below:

"We’re supposed to shoot early next year. We’re Europe-bound, we’re still on the hunt for Donnie who’s now on the diamond district in Marseilles. I go over to hunt him down, but with different intentions than you might imagine. So we’re gonna be in Marseilles, the Alps and London – it’s definitely a more glamorous journey than the last one, and probably a more fun, sexy journey."

Gudegast is returning as writer and director for the sequel, which is currently titled Den of Thieves 2: Pantera. Butler, who also serves as a producer on the project, is returning to the role of 'Big Nick', and it currently looks like 50 Cent and Jackson are set to reprise their roles. While an official synopsis has yet to be released, Butler's comments point to a story far removed from the original's gritty Los Angeles crime saga. Den of Thieves 2 currently doesn't have a release date, but more details on the sequel will be forthcoming if filming can get underway next year.
