Deadpool 2 has found its Cable, in the form of actor Josh Brolin. Ever since the tag at the end of Deadpool last year confirmed that the movie would not only be getting a sequel, but that fan-favorite mutant Cable would be involved, speculation has run rampant as to who could play the character. In the comics, Nathan Summers, aka the time-traveler Cable, has had a long and contentious history with Wade Wilson. Not only would the actor chosen need to embody Cable’s tough and gruff demeanor, but they’d need to be able to stand next to Ryan Reynold’s absurdist action hero.

Everyone from Michael Shannon to Brad Pitt to Pierce Brosnan has been thrown out as a possible actor, making Cable seem like one of the hottest roles in Hollywood. Fans have weighed their pros and cons, expecting any one of the big names to emerge sometime soon, as Deadpool 2 heads towards the start of production. It looks, however, as if all the hints and teases have been way off the mark, as a dark horse has emerged to claim the coveted role.

THR are exclusively reporting that Brolin will be playing Cable in Deadpool 2. Aside from his name never once popping up in talks about the character, Brolin will have a busy few years in the comic book movie world as he’s set to play Thanos in next year’s Avengers: Infinity War. That movie is currently in production, so it could be that Deadpool 2 won’t start shooting until he’s finished with Infinity War.

There’s also been talk that Avengers 4 could continue the story of Infinity War. If that’s the case, Brolin may be involved in that film, due out in 2019, as well. With both movies shooting concurrently, that might make it that much longer before the actor has time to begin working on Deadpool 2. Recently, we heard that the minds behind the movie were in no rush to get Deadpool 2 out, and are instead taking their time. With the news of Brolin’s casting, we could have our reason for the delay.

It’s also interesting to note that the Deadpool franchise is full of actors pulling double duty in superhero franchises. Reynolds has played both Deadpool and Green Lantern, while Morena Baccarin was previously the voice of Harrison Wells’ version of Gideon on The Flash before she appeared in the first Deadpool movie. As for Brolin: in addition to Thanos and Cable, he previously starred in the infamous 2010 Jonah Hex movie adaptation.

In addition to the casting of Brolin and the return of Reynolds and Baccarin, Brianna Hildebrand will be reprising her role as Negasonic Teenage Warhead. Meanwhile, Deadpool and Cable will be joined by their once and future X-Force teammate Domino, who will be played by Zazie Beetz of FX’s Atlanta. With the heroic casting announcements out of the way, all that’s left is to find out who will be the Deadpool 2 villain.
