Mark Hamill is getting into the holiday spirit by posting Star Wars-themed Thanksgiving tweets. In less than a month, fans will finally find out whether Hamill’s iconic character, Luke Skywalker will stay true to the Force and find hope again in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but for the time being, there’s no question the actor behind the character wants to spread messages of joy and optimism.

While the presence of Luke loomed over The Force Awakens and the Jedi master finally made his appearance within the last minute of the film, The Last Jedi marks the true return of the character, since he is clearly pivotal to the narrative in the eighth episode of the Skywalker family saga. There’s a lot of history with the character, of course, dating back 40 years with the release of the first Star Wars film, where Luke turned from a farm boy into an intergalactic hero who confronted his father in The Empire Strikes Back, before leading the fallen Jedi patriarch to redemption in Return of the Jedi.

Hamill is no doubt thankful of his experiences in the Star Wars saga, which is reflected in the photos he tweeted out Thursday to celebrate Thanksgiving. Most of the photos are lighthearted while another is heartfelt, but the meaning is the same: The amazing time he’s had on the films and the joy those films have brought to him and millions of fans worldwide is not lost on the actor.

Star Wars fans the world over were stunned and saddened earlier this year by the sudden passing of Carrie Fisher, who can be seen once again as General Leia Organa in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. With that in mind, the already momentous upcoming movie event also carries a great deal of emotional weight – both for those who were involved in making it, and for fans of the Star Wars universe. In addition to celebrating family and friends, Thanksgiving is also the perfect time of year to be thankful for the stories that we love, and the people who helped to make them – and Hamill is leading by example.

With any luck, fans will be getting more holiday-themed tweets from as the clock winds down to The Last Jedi, which is appropriately arriving in just in time for Christmas. For fans, it’s wonderful that Hamill is keeping the spirit of the holidays light – and a good way of making everybody forget about that ill-fated Star Wars Holiday Special.
