Dave Chapelle Is Joining Bradley Cooper On The Big Screen, Get The Details

After being off the radar for a few years, Dave Chappelle is back, and everybody is excited about it. The legendary comedian has two successful Netflix comedy specials (with a third on the way later this year), and now he's getting back into more filmed projects. After appearing in Spike Lee's Chi-Raq in 2015, Chappelle has landed his next major film role. He'll appear alongside none other than Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga in the musical drama, A Star is Born.

The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop, and they report that Dave Chappelle has been cast in A Star is Born, led by Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga. As well as starring in the film, A Star is Born will be Cooper's feature film debut as a director.

Bradley Cooper stars as Jackson Maine, a fading country music star who helps an aspiring musician (Lady Gaga) with her career. The two begin a love affair, but as her star rises Jackson finds his plummeting.

Dave Chappelle will play a character called Noodles, Jackson's oldest friend with whom he started out with playing in blues clubs. It's unknown how big a role this is for Chappelle, but it's likely more than a minor one, seeing as how he plays the main character's best friend. And with a name like Noodles, we're not exactly stretching our imaginations when we say it's probably a comedic role too.

This iteration of A Star is Born will be the third remake of the classic film. The original premiered in 1937 starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March. It was then remade in 1954 with Judy Garland and James Mason starring, and then again in 1976, with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson in the lead. Though each version is fairly similar, each remake updates the music to reflect the times. In the case of the latest remake, Lady Gaga has composed and written original songs for the film.

Dave Chappelle may seem like an odd choice for this sort of project, but the comic has plenty of experience under his belt (Con Air, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Half-Baked), and his star has been back on the rise as of late thanks to his Netflix specials and a well-received hosting gig on Saturday Night Live last November. Actually, Chappelle might be the least risky factor in this whole film. This is already the third remake, so it's got its work cut out for it to differentiate itself from the previous films. Plus, this is Bradley Cooper's first time directing, which comes with its own bag of risks.

A Star is Born is set for a release date of September 18, 2018.
