To celebrate its tenth anniversary, Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight will be returning to a select few IMAX theaters for one week only. The Dark Knight was instrumental in breaking new ground for the superhero genre, delivering an interpretation of Batman that was gritty, urban and very much grounded in reality. Despite acclaimed performances from the likes of Christian Bale, Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman, The Dark Knight will always be remembered for Heath Ledger's portrayal of The Joker, a role that, tragically, would prove to be one of his last.

The Dark Knight was also notable for featuring several scenes shot specifically for IMAX. With Nolan looking to create a truly cinematic and immersive viewing experience, the director utilized 70mm IMAX cameras - new technology for a feature film - to shoot several key sequences, such as the Joker's introductory bank robbery and the Batpod car chase. In total, The Dark Knight features around 30 minutes of IMAX footage and paved the way for other blockbusters to use the format, with the 70mm cameras usually reserved for documentary film-making until that point.

Fans who didn't catch The Dark Knight on an IMAX screen the first time around will now have a second chance, as the movie is returning to four theaters on August 24th. The chosen theaters are AMC Universal Citywalk IMAX in Universal City LA, AMC Lincoln Square IMAX in NYC, AMC Metreon IMAX in San Francisco and Ontario Place Cinesphere IMAX in Toronto. Tickets for the opening day of this week-long event will go on sale July 20th but fans may want to book quickly, since there will only be one screening per day.

Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight was always intended to be experienced on the huge IMAX theater screens, so as to truly appreciate those scenes shot in 70mm film. However, the majority of fans likely saw the movie at a regular theater during its original run in 2008. As such, it seems appropriate that to celebrate a decade since its release, fans will have another opportunity to see The Dark Knight in all its splendor, perhaps even offering those who have seen the movie a million times by now a fresh way of reliving this cinematic classic.

It's also testament to the enduring popularity of The Dark Knight's interpretation of the Batman universe, and the reverence in which fans hold the movie, that its 10th anniversary is being celebrated in such a way. It seems that as the years continue to roll by, other milestones will likely warrant similar treatment.

The Dark Knight's IMAX return begins August 24th. Tickets go on sale July 20th.
