DC’s Justice League will now be receiving its score from Danny Elfman, one of the superhero genre’s most experienced and beloved composers. The film is set to be the second DC film Warner Bros. is releasing this year, which coming off of the overwhelming success of Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman, has the kind of momentum that few other superhero films do. And that’s a stark contrast to how many had viewed the DCEU films near the end of last year, coming off of the disappointing reactions to both Batman V Superman and Suicide Squad.

Following the recent departure of Zack Snyder, Joss Whedon has signed up to oversee the completion of the film in Snyder’s place. And following the start of reshoots on Justice League earlier this week, it looks like Whedon has brought one of his more recent and notable collaborators to help him truly finalize and capture the creative vision and tone of Justice League in the coming months.

THR is reporting that Elfman has officially signed on to compose the score for Justice League. This marks Elfman’s eighth time working in the superhero genre, after composing music for Tim Burton’s Batman and Batman Returns, 2o03’s Hulk, Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2, Hellboy 2: The Golden Army, and even Whedon’s last film, Avengers: Age of Ultron. He is a frequent collaborator to Tim Burton and Sam Raimi, and is one of the more celebrated film composers of his generation.

Elfman will also have the chance to work with and incorporate several character themes that have already been established in the universe, following Hans Zimmer and Junkie XL’s work on both Man of Steel and Batman V Superman. In fact, as some fans may already be aware, XL was originally hired to compose the score for Justice League, though, it looks like Whedon is entrusting the completion of the film’s music with Elfman, similar to what he did with Avengers: Age of Ultron. The report states Junkie XL has now moved on to compose Warner Bros.’ 2018 reboot of Tomb Raider.

Elfman’s scores in the superhero genre, specifically his themes for both Batman and Spider-Man, are widely considered to be some of the best musical themes in the genre. And now, fans can look forward to hearing what he does with characters like The Flash, Cyborg, and Aquaman. He has a noticeably different musical style than someone like XL, which could be further indication of a possible change in creative direction now that Whedon is at the helm of Justice League.
