Constantine has had something of a rough first season, to say the least. Despite debuting to somewhat strong numbers, it quickly became apparent that Friday night was not the ideal timeslot for the series. Of course, it didn’t help that the show often felt like a watered down version of not only the comic book on which it was based but also shows like Supernatural. Ultimately, NBC decided not to order a full first season, which means that last week’s episode was technically the season finale.

ou know what they say: No news is good news. The fact that Constantine isn’t canceled yet – despite continuously running into television troubles – is certainly the best news the show has had in a long, long time.

Unfortunately, the fact that Cerone is talking about pitching season 2 to NBC seems to more or less confirm that rumors about the show moving to Syfy under a new name were just that – rumors.

Which is a shame, frankly. Hellblazer – Constantine‘s comic book source material – is a weird, dark, cynical story with a main character who isn’t always charming and likable. At NBC, the material feels stifled, generic, almost family-friendly. On a cable network like Syfy, the material might be able to take some chances and move in a different direction, one that’s more in line with the comic books.

Then again, it’s still possible that the show could move elsewhere if NBC were to drop it from its schedule. But considering the ratings have been so consistently underwhelming, I wouldn’t bet on it.
