After a hasty change of plans, Constantine‘s lead female character Liv (Lucy Griffiths), an original creation by showrunners David S. Goyer and Daniel Cerone, was ousted at the end of the TV version of the pilot and replaced with a familiar name from the comics: Zed Martin, who is played by Mexican actor Angélica Celaya. Zed was introduced in the revamped version of the pilot, shown obsessively drawing pictures of Constantine despite never having met him.

Zed was one of the first allies and lovers that John Constantine encountered in the Hellblazer comics, though she only appeared in a couple of early story arcs. Along with Constantine’s best friend Chas Chandler and Newcastle Crew member Ritchie Simpson, she’s one of several characters from the comic books that have been – or will be – introduced in the show’s first season.

In a new clip from the next episode of Constantine, ‘The Darkness Beneath,’ the laughing magician gets confronted by Zed in the honeymoon suite of his hotel, where they exchange the information that they’ve learned by digging through one another’s trash and/or stealing each other’s stuff. NBC has also released an official synopsis for the episode, along with some promotional stills and some TV spots.

Check them out below:

“Deep in the mountains of Western Pennsylvania, John (Matt Ryan) is a small mining community’s only defense against an ancient Welsh spirit. In the course of protecting these isolated innocents, John finds a vital new ally in a mysterious young woman named Zed (Angélica Celaya).”

The premise of a Welsh spirit that lives in mines suggests that Constantine is going for a “monster of the week” formula, at least in its early episodes. There’s nothing wrong with that; many of the comics were self-contained stories about Constantine going up against one demon or another, and it’s a formula that helped shows like Supernatural.

Also similar to Supernatural is the apparent road trip that Constantine is taking across America; last week’s episode saw him fighting a demon in Atlanta, Georgia, and by the second episode he’s made it all the way to Pennsylvania. Who knows where he’ll end up next.
