Coen Brothers’ Western TV Series Begins Filming Next Month

Following their work on the critically acclaimed musical-comedy Hail, Caesar! from early last year, the Coen brothers are currently hard at work on the forthcoming Western TV series The Ballad of Buster Scruggs – and word has it that filming will begin next month. After spending several decades honing their chops as premiere filmmakers of a slightly satiric bend with such major motion pictures as Fargo and No Country for Old Men, Joel and Ethan Coen are two of the most well known writer/director duos of the late 20th and 21st centuries.

As for their next project together, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs will see the Coen brothers joining forces with Megan Ellison of Annapurna Television to deliver a small screen production that is sure to draw from some of the same thematic territory and narrative tone previously explored in their Western feature True Grit from 2010. Longtime fans of the two filmmakers are no doubt eagerly awaiting any news from the forthcoming drama series, and the latest word has filming slated to begin soon.

According to The Playlist, official casting notices have recently been sent out to interested parties in Hollywood that reveal a shoot schedule slated to begin next month in Albuquerque, New Mexico. There are no big names attached just yet to The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, but a log line for the comedy-drama production has been revealed as follows:

The stories of six individuals weave together in the old West at the end of the Civil War.

Admittedly, there is not that much to go on in regards to assessing the creative direction that the new Coen brothers series might take, though any announcements about the cast will be sure to fill in some of the mystery surrounding the soon-to-be in development small screen production. After True Grit and the Noah Hawley created Fargo series on FX, it will be exciting to see what the Coen brothers will be able to scrounge up with The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.

Much like their past work, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs sounds as though it’s tailor made for an ensemble cast presumably consisting of Coen brothers regulars and newcomers alike. And if the new show is anything like the under-appreciated Hail, Caesar! from last year, then longtime Coen brothers fans may be in for a real treat in the making.
