Cloverfield 3 is the most anticipated horror movie of 2018. The genre enjoyed its biggest year ever in 2017, led by the enormous box office success of IT, the highest-grossing R-rated horror movie of all time. Jordan Peele’s Get Out also earned a mix of acclaim (99 percent on Rotten Tomatoes) and commercial success ($254 million worldwide on a $4.5 million budget). Other notable releases within the horror genre this year include Split, Alien: Covenant, Annabelle: Creation, Happy Death Day, It Comes At Night, and Jigsaw.

There’s a chance that horror can keep it going in 2018, with Insidious: The Last Key kicking things off in January. You can also expect the long-awaited Halloween reboot to hit theaters. But after the success of 10 Cloverfield Lane, the series is back for a third installment due out in February. And a new survey reveals that fans are looking forward to it more than any other horror movie next year.

Popular ticketing app Fandango announced the results of a new survey on Friday, revealing that the as-yet untitled Cloverfield 3 is the most anticipated “horror thriller” of 2018. Halloween came in second in the study, which polled more than 8,000 Fandango users from Dec. 18-27 on the movies, characters, and actors they’re looking forward to the most. Here’s the full top-5:

  1. Cloverfield 3
  2. Halloween
  3. The Purge: The Island
  4. Insidious: The Last Key
  5. A Quiet Place

As you can see, the top-4 movies are all sequels. Cloverfield 3, which evolved from a movie with the working title God Particle, essentially sounds like “Cloverfield in Space.” Julius Onah (The Girl Is In Trouble) directed a script from Oren Uziel (22 Jump St.) and Doug Jung (Star Trek: Beyond), with Elizabeth Debicki (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2) and Daniel Bruhl (Captain America: Civil War) starring.

The only non-sequel on the list is A Quiet Place, which stars Emily Blunt and John Krasinski and concerns a family that needs to stay silent in order to fend off an unknown evil force. But 2018 almost looks like the “Year of the Sequel” in 2018. The New Mutants, which is set in the X-Men universe, also falls under the horror umbrella. Next year also includes the Conjuring 2 spinoff The Nun. The makers of Cloverfield 3 will certainly be pleased to hear that of all the anticipated sequels next year, theirs rises to the top.

It’s also telling that Halloween couldn’t reach the top spot among 2018’s most anticipated horror movies. The reboot is still part of the most iconic horror franchise of any to come out next year, and will bring back Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode with accomplished director David Gordon Green (Stronger) at the helm. But the Cloverfield franchise is fresher in fans’ minds right now, with the acclaimed 10 Cloverfield Lane having been released in 2016. Cloverfield 3 is in the lead entering the new year, but Halloween could change that in the coming months if it delivers promising previews.
