Chris Hemsworth returns as superhero/Norse God of Thunder Thor this year in the highly anticipated The Avengers: Age of Ultron, but we won’t get his next solo entry until the 2017 release of Thor: Ragnarok. We know by now that 2016′s Captain America: Civil War is poised to shake up the Marvel Cinematic Universe in ways equal to (but very different from) the storyline’s comic book counterpart, but what of Thor’s third outing?

Taken literally, Ragnarök is a Norse myth which preordains future events culminating in the death of numerous gods (including Odin, Thor and Loki) and an end to the world. In the comics, Ragnarok was both a Thor story arc and a cyborg clone of Thor sent into battle during the Marvel Civil War, during which the clone lost control and killed several superheroes.

Since Thor: Ragnarok will be released in the wake of some major changes in the MCU (Ant-Man and Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy 2), we may presume that Thor’s place in this universe will be greatly altered. Still, we’re in the dark on the plot, and we don’t know who’s directing.

According to star Chris Hemsworth, we may not be the only ones. While promoting his Michael Mann-directed cyber thriller Blackhat, Hemsworth was asked by Digital Spy if he could share anything about the changes Thor will face going into Thor 3 following The Avengers 2.

Hemsworth replied:

No, I can’t. But also, there is no script for ‘Thor,’ the next ‘Thor,’ so I have no idea.

The screenwriters for Thor: Ragnarok are Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost, both of whom have a long history with Marvel’s animated universe, and Yost co-wrote Thor: The Dark World. Hemsworth seems to be saying two different things: he hasn’t seen a screenplay for the next Thor, and he can’t share any details on the potential fate of his character – it’s entirely possible the actor has some idea what’s in store down the line

One thing Hemsworth closed the Q&A with: “It’s pretty big.” Given the fact that Marvel’s comic book version of Thor is now a woman, and the expected changes to Earth’s Mightiest by the time the two-part Infinity War kicks off in 2018, the notion of Hemsworth passing Thor’s mantle onto a new hero is not entirely out of the question.

What do you think, Screen Ranters? Can you guess what’s in store for Hemsworth with ‘Thor: Ragnarok’?
