Chris Hemsworth says he and Taika Waititi want to work together again and they were recently throwing around ideas about a potential Thor 4. The third and seemingly final installment in Marvel Studios’ solo Thor series, Thor: Ragnarok, released in November 2017 to overwhelming critical and commercial success. The film is one of the highest-rated superhero movies ever to release and is tied in second-place for the highest-rated Marvel Cinematic Universe movie as well.

In addition to garnering critical acclaim, Thor 3 has grossed an astronomical $850.37 million since its debut two months ago. That’s over $200 million more than the amount Alan Taylor’s Thor: The Dark World garnered in 2013 and just over $400 million more than the final tally for Kenneth Branagh’s Thor in 2011. Thor: Ragnarok is lauded as one of the most fun experiences people will have watching a superhero film, and that experience was shared by those who worked on the project behind the scenes. So, it isn’t surprising that the creative team would want to return for another go-around.

In an interview with USA Today for his latest film, 12 Strong, Chris Hemsworth said he and Thor 3 director Taika Waititi were recently “throwing ideas around” about Thor 4 on New Year’s Eve.

“We gave cheers to Thor 3. But it also was like what could we do with four? We could do this and this. We were throwing ideas around. But also, just to work together again. That was one of the most enjoyable creative partnerships I’ve ever had.”

Thor 3 successfully reinvigorated interest in Thor’s standalone story arc and managed to revolutionize the character on the big screen. Hemsworth has repeatedly said that he wants to see where the character’s story goes next, but he says that the potential of Thor 4 happening is entirely contingent on how Thor’s story concludes (or begins anew) in Anthony and Joe Russo’s Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4.

“It just depends on how The Avengers (movies) all wrap up. I finished shooting and now they are going to edit it and see how the stories play out. There are so many interwoven scenes and stories and characters.”

Waititi exclusively told Screen Rant around the time Thor 3 hit theaters that he wasn’t interested in making Thor 4 but rather Thor: Ragnarok 2. The reason Waititi’s film worked so well and was well-received by so many was because it shed Thor’s Shakespearean background in favor of a more rock ‘n’ roll-themed, Jack Kirby-inspired story arc. If Hemsworth and Waititi don’t get to make Thor: Ragnarok 2, the actor still wants to fight alongside Wolverine and the X-Men at some point in the future.
