Chris Hemsworth revealed he's not a fan of Marvel Studios' sequel to Thor, Thor: The Dark World. The film was Hemsworth's third turn at playing the God of Thunder and the character's second solo outing. While the movies performed well at the box office, it's regarded by critics as mediocre in comparison to other films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Released in 2013, Thor: The Dark World pitted the God of Thunder against the dark elf known as Malekith, who sought to use a weapon called the Aether to attack the Nine Realms. After earning $644 million at the worldwide box office, The Dark World went on to become the 10th highest grossing film of 2013. Despite its success, the movie is widely regarded as one of the weakest entries in the MCU due in part to its lack of a compelling story. For a great number of fans, the memory of The Dark World was washed away by its sequel, Thor: Ragnarok, which has received credit for reinventing the franchise.

In an interview with GQ, Hemsworth spoke about his portrayal of Thor in the first two films as the classic masculine hero and describes The Dark World as "meh."

The first one is good, the second one is meh. What masculinity was, the classic archetype - it just all starts to feel very familiar. I was so aware that we were right on the edge.

Hemsworth's opinion on the movie echoes the thoughts of fans who have long felt that The Dark World falls short when comparing it to other movies in the MCU, which are generally given favorable reviews. This opinion is also shared by Malekith actor Christopher Eccleston, who took it a step further by saying that making the movie made him want to put a gun in his mouth.

Though Thor: The Dark World isn't necessarily considered a "bad" film, it's still one of the MCU's worst-reviewed films. It has a 66 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has a score of 54 on Metacritic. The movie was criticized for its lackluster story, humor, and action.

The franchise received a much-needed rejuvenation from Taika Waititi's Thor: Ragnarok, which took the character in a totally different direction by infusing him with stronger elements of comedy. The film also adapted a new tone, and killed off and left behind most of its core characters, which made the film less like a sequel and more like a new beginning for the series. Ragnarok was hit with critical acclaim and has been described as the best of the Thor trilogy.
