China Re-Closes Movie Theaters After One Weekend

After re-opening for one weekend, China has ordered all movie theaters to close their doors again, due to an increase of imported coronavirus cases. Last week, industry analysts reported that China could reopen movie theaters in late April or early May. Surprisingly, China then opened theaters just a few days later, to very low crowds. In order to boost audience numbers, they planned to rerelease hits like Avengers and Avatar.

According to Deadline, the national film bureau in China ordered all theaters to close again today. There's no mention of when they might open once again. They initially opened 500 theaters this past weekend, and Shanghai planned to re-open 205 more on Saturday. This decision comes after 53 new coronavirus cases were reported yesterday as coming from overseas.

The country will likely take actions to limit foreigners from coming into China for the time being. They have had 81,340 confirmed cases, and have seen a decline in new cases reported daily. Other countries like the United States are yet to hit the peak of the pandemic, with cases multiplying every day.

The news of theaters opening again brought hope and optimism to both China and the world. This quick reversal means it will likely be at least a few more weeks until they can open up again. U.S. movie theaters have reportedly gotten financial support from the Senate in order to weather the temporary closures. They will possibly be free to attend when they first reopen in the future.

The doors are not supposed to open right now for the safety of people from the virus
