After seven feature films, franchise creator Don Mancini is preparing to bring Chucky the murderous doll to TV, in the form of an eight-part series. While by no means the most popular horror franchise to come out of the 80s, Child’s Play is certainly no slouch, having maintained a consistent fanbase for decades. Last year brought fans the highly praised Cult of Chucky, which saw the titular slasher slice his way through a mental asylum.

2018 marks the 30th anniversary of the original Child’s Play film, and as one might imagine, Mancini has no plans to send Chucky off into retirement. Child’s Play is quite unique among big horror franchises, in that the story has never been rebooted, and primary roles have (almost) never been recast. While the series has gotten pretty crazy at times, no entry has been erased from continuity, and no character has been forgotten. In an age where Halloween is about to erase the sequels from continuity – after having done a similar thing 20 years ago for Halloween H20 – a consistent universe means something.

Now, Bloody Disgusting reports that Don Mancini is set to once again take Chucky to a place he’s never gone before: TV. Of course, this won’t be Chucky’s first time on TV screens, as his last two films went straight to video and streaming. Still, this will be his first time starring in an ongoing TV series. While a network or streaming outlet has yet to be attached, Mancini plans the series to run eight episodes. Returning alongside Mancini will be producer David Kirschner, who has also been with the franchise since the beginning.

Those fans worrying that a TV series would mean the story finally being rebooted can feel free to stop, as Mancini has no intentions of doing that. Instead, he plans for the series to directly continue from the ending of Cult of Chucky, which featured a Chucky-possessed Nica (Fiona Dourif) riding off into the sunset with Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly). There are certainly many ways to take the plot from that ending, and one assumes that Chucky voice Brad Dourif, Fiona, Tilly, and Chucky’s nemesis Andy Barclay (Alex Vincent) would all be willing to come back once again.

Further details on where the Child’s Play series’ story will go are being withheld for now, although Mancini says that he is “going dark, darker than ever before. It’s going to be very creepy.” That kind of promise will likely be music to horror fans’ ears.
