Our first look at Marvel’s foray into young adult drama is here, and it’s heavy on the angst. In fact, you’d be hard-pressed to remember this is superhero show for most of the trailer, and that’s actually quite intriguing.

Freeform has dropped the first trailer for its take on Cloak & Dagger today, and the focus is not on the superheroic exploits of the duo in the title, but mostly about the lives of their civilian alter-egos, Tyrone Johnson and Tandy Bowen.

By the time their powers do show up, it’s a lot like their comics counterparts—Tandy gets her daggers of light, and Tyrone even gets a nod to his comic book look when he finds himself suddenly teleported to a rooftop with his bedsheet draped over him like a cape.

What’s different seems to be their origin story. There’s a lot more of a seeming destiny between Tandy and Tyrone here, with the younger versions of themselves meeting when Tyrone saves Tandy from a car accident, only for their later selves to bump into each other and seemingly awaken their abilities. In the comics, Tandy and Tyrone are pair of runaways forcefully subjected to a designer drug that gives them powers, which might have been a bit too grim for Freeform’s tastes. Still, this looks quite unlike any of Marvel’s other projects, and that’s refreshingly intriguing.

Cloak & Dagger will hit Freeform some time in 2018.
