Joan Rivers’ personal doctor took a selfie inside the procedure room, it is claimed.

The 81-year-old comedian passed away on September 4 at New York’s Mount Sinai Hospital after falling into cardiac arrest after undergoing surgery on her vocal cords a week before.

Apparently a doctor who performed a biopsy on Joan took a selfie photo in the procedure room while she was under anaesthesia, a staff member at Manhattan’s Yorkville Endoscopy clinic, where Joan was treated, said, according to CNN.

The photo was taken after Dr. Lawrence Cohen finished the scheduled endoscopy, it is claimed. The alleged biopsy was done on Joan without her prior consent, a source told CNN.

According to the outlet, investigators think Joan’s vocal cords started to swell during the reported biopsy. The swelling hindered the flow of oxygen to the Fashion Police star’s lungs, which in turn may have caused her to go into cardiac arrest.

The Yorksville Endoscopy clinic previously issued a statement, denying a biopsy was performed at the clinic but not denying the comedian had an unplanned procedure, ABC 7 reports.

Gastroenterologist Dr. Cohen, who also served as the clinic’s medical director, is not currently “performing procedures” at the clinic, a spokesperson for the clinic confirmed via ABC 7. The doctor is also no longer serving as medical director.
The personal physician has not been identified.

Joan is survived by her daughter Melissa and grandson Cooper.

Announcing her mother’s tragic passing, Melissa said in a statement: “My mother’s greatest joy in life was to make people laugh. Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon.”
