Alongside Diaz as infamous baddie Miss Hannigan, Jamie Foxx plays a character called Benjamin Stacks based on the original's Daddy Warbucks and Oscar-nominated child actress Quvenzhané Wallis stars as little orphan Annie.

Jay-Z is co-producer on the new Annie movie alongside Will Smith, whose daughter Willow was originally in line for the title role. Beasts Of The Southern Wild star Wallis replaced her after Willow, now 13, outgrew the part.

Jay-Z, who sampled a song from the classic Broadway musical for his 1998 hit 'Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)', is also rumoured to be writing new songs for the film, which is set in present-day New York City. Director Will Gluck (Easy A, Friends With Benefits) started shooting in September and Sony has scheduled a release date of December 19, 2014.

The original stage production of Annie opened on Broadway in 1977 and ran for six years. The popular 1982 film version was directed by John Huston and starred 11-year-old Aileen Quinn in the title role alongside Carol Burnett as Miss Hannigan and Albert Finney as Daddy Warbucks.
