Bradley Cooper’s remake of A Star is Born has had its release date changed by Warner Bros for the third time. The opening for the drama starring Cooper and Lady Gaga has been pushed back by five months. But it’s not all gloom and doom for the film, as the studio is said to have a very good reason for doing so, which points to the movie as being one to keep an eye on next year.

The original version of A Star is Born was shown in theaters in 1937, and starred Janet Gaynor and Fredric March. This was remade in 1954 with Judy Garland and James Mason, and again in 1976 with Kris Kristofferson and Barbra Streisand. In each case, the core of the story tells of the difficult relationship between an acting/singing ingénue and her mentor. Another remake was announced in 2011, with Clint Eastwood directing and Beyoncé starring in the main role. That eventually fell through, but led to Eastwood recommending Cooper to the studio as his replacement. Lady Gaga was subsequently brought on board to play the lead opposite Cooper, as filming started in April of this year.

Originally Warner Bros. had set the release date for September 28, 2018, but then brought it forward to May 18 to market it during the lucrative summer season. But now Deadline has reported that it has been moved again and will now arrive in theaters on October 5, 2018. The reason for this is apparently a positive one, with studio heads being reportedly impressed with the current edit of the film and the two performances from the leads. As such, this latest change will put it back in line for consideration by judges at the height of the film awards season for next year.

Outside of her musical work, Gaga is best known for her roles in American Horror Story, which earned her a Golden Globe when she played the vampire Countess in Hotel. Cooper has previously shown that he can handle drama just as well as comedy, in the likes of American Sniper and American Hustle. In this updated version of the plot, Cooper is playing Jackson Maine, a country music star who’s on the road downwards. When he meets talented singer Ally (Gaga), they quickly fall into a love affair that starts to suffer as her fame begins to eclipse his.

It will be interesting to see how Copper fares with this classic story in his directorial debut, as well as the atypical musical role that he’s taken on. Gaga is acting under her birth name of Stefani Germanotta, and promo images suggest that it will be a gritty performance far from her usual flamboyant persona. The presence of performers like Dave Chappelle , Sam Elliot, and Andrew Dice Clay in the cast also adds to the anticipation. Stage sequences were filmed at Glastonbury and Coachella for extra authenticity, and this new move by the studio suggests that it could be something special.
