Guillermo Del Toro’s “Crimson Peak” is the Friday leader at the U.S. box office, but the weekend crown will probably go to Jack Black’s “Goosebumps” or Matt Damon’s “The Martian,” Friday’s estimates showed.

All three titles could finish above $20 million with “Goosebumps” and “The Martian” generating the higher estimates on Friday. The frame looks likely to be the closest since the Sept. 11-13 weekend, when “The Perfect Guy” took in $25.9 million to edge “The Visit” with $25.4 million.
Should “The Martian” prevail, Fox’s sci-fier would be the first movie to win for three weekends in a row since “Straight Outta Compton” achieved the feat two months ago.

Universal-Legendary’s “Crimson Peak” led the pack in Thursday night previews with $855,000, with estimates showing a Friday total between $7 million and $9 million at 2,984 sites. That would leave the chiller in the $17 million to $22 million range.

Sony’s “Goosebumps” took in $600,000 at previews on its way to a first day total of $6 million to $8 million at 3,501 locations. Weekend projections range as high as $25 million — though Sony is expecting a total under $20 million. The film also stars Dylan Minnette, Odeya Rush, Amy Ryan, Ryan Lee and Jillian Bell.
