Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you probably know by now that remakes of classic film and TV titles are currently a hot commodity in Hollywood. In just the past month, reboots of Lost in Space and Greatest American Hero have been put into development for the small screen. It would seem no property is safe from being remade for a new generation, apparently not even Bewitched.

The classic ’60s and ’70s comedy series, about a suburban housewife with magical powers who marries a mortal man, was a ratings darling when it debuted exactly 50 years ago, finishing as the number two show in America. Since then, the series has inspired a 2005 film starring Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell, as well as a failed pilot for CBS in 2011. Now the same production company that created those two recent reboots hopes to make magic happen and turn it into a TV series again.

According to Deadline, Lucy Fisher and Douglas Wick’s Red Wagon Entertainment has partnered with Sony Pictures TV on a modern-day remake of Bewitched. Written by The Vow writers Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein, the potential series is currently being shopped around, and reportedly there is already interest from multiple networks.

While the 2005 film underperformed domestically at the box office, it did end up earning its money back internationally. So there’s still a market for Bewitched, even if it happens to be abroad. Yet it’s also possible that the current wave of nostalgia for classic films and series, combined with the current craze to remake them, could actually be beneficial to the success of a new version in the U.S.

Now, more than ever, may be the time to attempt a remake. And perhaps the greatest test of whether a fantasy comedy series like Bewitched can succeed in today’s world may come sooner than we think. ABC’s new musical comedy fairytale Galavant premieres this January, and it’s as ridiculous and outlandish as it gets. If it can triumph, then maybe another series along the same lines can, too.

What do you think, Screen Rant readers? Are the days of successful fantasy comedies like Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie gone? Or are audiences just waiting for the right one to come along?

We’ll keep you posted on future developments for Bewitched.
